The History Of Chinchilla Colors

Chinchilla breeds and crossbreeds have varied with the increase in popularity of these rodents in the past few decades. Chinchilla breeders can be credited for the wide range of Chin breeds and crossbreeds. An assortment of hues and colors has also been developed through the mutation of these rodents.

The natural color of Chins is referred to as ’standard.’ This is recognizable with several characteristics like a prominent blue hue, white underbelly, and a striking cloak in the fur. The categories of the standard breed are dark, extra dark, light and medium.

Chinchilla Colors include the ebony, one of the most common colors that have evolved thanks to mutation. It should be noted that mutation caused the development of other Chinchilla breeds. Only the standard breed has not been affected by mutation. The ebony breed also includes colors like solid black and light gray. For an ebony mutation to happen, at least one parent Chin should have the ebony gene. Fully homozygous ebony Chins are characterized by black fur that cover even their bellies. They also have blue hue and a strong cloak.

The charcoal is another of the many Chinchilla Colors that have evolved through the mutation of Chins. Similar to the ebony breed, the charcoal breed has two variations- heterozygous and homozygous. The gene for charcoal breed is in the recessive form, meaning it can only be mutated when two parents have the gene. Unlike the ebony breed, the charcoal breed has a matte appearance, compared to the glossy look of the ebony breed. Other mutations may also result from the charcoal breed, like the charbrown which is a combination of brown and charcoal Chins.

The black velvet is considered as having the most potent strength among all Chinchilla Colors. The full veiling that is characteristic of this color completely wraps around the Chin’s face and the lower part of the tail. Other distinguishing marks of this mutation are the white belly and the brilliant bluish hue of the Chin. Many call this variety as the ‘touch of velvet.’

Still another Chin color variety is the beige. Similar to other colors, this variety has two versions- the heterozygous beige and the homozygous genes. The latter is produced with a couple of recessive beige genes. It is characterized by the Chin having full, red eyes and pinkish ears. Unlike other Chinchilla Colors, the heterozygous beige has dark, reddish eyes and pinkish ears that are freckled. This breed is produced even with one parent having recessive beige gene. Both homozygous and heterozygous beige breeds have a white underbelly and bluish fur. Mutation can also be produced by cross breeding the beige breed with another variety.

There are also other breeds that are bred although very rarely. These include pastel, tan, blue diamond, sapphire, violet, and Sullivan beige breeds. These are some of the Chinchilla Colors that can be seen in most parts of the world. Without a doubt, these colors make Chins even more charming, attractive and lovable especially to its owners.
