There are over 1,700 shows in circulation. I don’t think he’s perfomed more than half-a-dozen shows in the last 40 years that someone hasn’t recorded.
A website called, “Brucelegs,” rates them.
Hardcore fans are partial to the 1978, “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” shows. Why? Nobody, before or since, has ever seen anything like them. Three to four hours of the greatest rock & roll that’s ever been or ever will be, plus stories, pacing, poignancy. Every show was performed like it was his last. As John Steward said as part of the Kennedy Center Honor show, “He empties the tank. Every time.” He still does.
You left those Darkness concerts exhausted, not having had the slightest inkling beforehand, regardless of who you had seen up to that point, that anything or anyone could be that great. I was stunned, in shock for a week after seeing my first. There simply is no way to describe them.
Supposedly a multiple DVD set of those shows is in the works, but that’s been a rumor for several years, so I’m a bit skeptical.
Four shows were broadcast on radio networks covering their respective regions of the country. Two are considered as the standouts: Passaic, NJ, 9/19/78, and San Francisco, 12/15 (also known simply as, “Winterland.”) These shows are probably the two best known and widely distributed of all Springsteen bootlegs.
You can go to a Website called, “Wolfgang’s Vault,” and hear hundred of shows by almost every artist who performed live through about 1985. The Winterland show is on the site and can be streamed, but not downloaded. You have to register, but it’s free, and you can listen to the show. Just be sure and TURN IT UP.
People argue about who the greatest living songwriters are. Dylan, McCartney, or Springsteen – gotta be one of the three. There’s no real argument about who is the greatest live performer in the history of amplification.
What’s even more amazing, is that his recent shows, performed in November, after he turned 60, were almost as intense – still the Greatest Show on Earth.
He has earned his stature with forty years of excellence writing songs, in the studio, and on stage.
